When thinking of extraordinary people, I sometimes think of an ancestor: Sr. Mary Bonaventure Caraher, a direct decendant on my fathers side.
She was the daughter of Thomas Caraher and Ellen Farrell, born in Salina N.Y. September 5, 1844 and entered the convent of St. Anthony November 19, 1864.
She had volunteered her services for the Hawaiian Islands in October of 1883, at the same time Blessed Mother Marianne Cope and Father Damien were ministering to the abandoned lepers of Molokai.
According to Sr. Mary Laurence, she was the head of the Malulani Hospital in Maui. Sr. Mary Laurence was kind enough to provide the photo of Sr. Bonaventure that she said "probably is one taken in her 50's..."
The Record of Professed Sisters confirm she labored "faithfully for 40 years in this missonary field and departed this life April 21, 1923..."
