Rick and Jane Scrak, of Bethlehem, love their dogs, Teddy, 6, Beanie, 2 and Scooter, 9 months, the day after Beanie saved their lives with his distressed bark which woke them up alerting them to high levels of carbon monoxide in their home, due to a blocked oil furnace, at 412 W. Broad Street, December 14, 2007. (DEMETRA STAMUS/Special to TMC / December 15, 2007)
A Bethlehem couple promised extra Christmas treats for their toy poodle, Beanie, for alerting them to toxic levels of carbon monoxide in their home early Friday.
Rick and Jean Scrak said when their apricot poodle woke them at 5 a.m. gagging, they both had pounding headaches, felt disorientated and Jean Scrak fell to her knees when she tried to walk. They soon learned the cause: The house was filled with carbon monoxide fumes from a blocked oil furnace.
''If it wasn't for Beanie, we were told we wouldn't have made it out alive,'' Jean Scrak said Friday afternoon. ''He saved our lives and if not for him, we would have never have woken up.''
