Surgeon trades riches for a wealth of smiles

Today's HERO is plastic surgeon, Geoff Williams. A wealthy man that could spend his time between luxury resorts and shopping for Armani suits while driving around town in a top-of-the-line Mercedes. But he doesn't. Instead Dr. Williams invests in SMILES and faces.

As a recent AP story noted, "...he spends his money on hundreds of strangers, half a world away. Grown men with rope-like tumors engulfing their eyes, nose, lips. Teenage girls with heads cocked permanently to one side because of burn-tightened skin. But mostly children — with faces split up the middle like a half-open zipper..."

"A lot of the kids that are born with a cleft lip and palate just never go to school. Their mothers will keep them home as a way of protecting them from the cruelties of society," Williams says. "No education means little opportunity for work, for getting married, for everything in life that brings them rewards. Those little babies don't know what they're in for."

Another example of why, Shut Up and Smile supports The SmileTrain.

Thank you - Dr. Williams.
